Tanzania Centre for Democracy (TCD) was established in 2005 as a non-governmental, non religious and not for profit political parties’ membership organization registered under the Societies Act as a platform of political parties to contribute towards promoting democratic governance in Tanzania through multiparty dialogue and constitutionalism. TCD was founded by five political parties namely; Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA), Civic United Front (CUF), United Democratic Party (UDP) and Tanzania Labour Party (TLP). The current TCD members comprise CCM, CHADEMA, CUF, ACT Wazalendo and NCCR-Mageuzi. TCD has two categories of members, full and associate members. The full members are political parties with representation in the Parliament, representation in the representative Council in Zanzibar and Local Councils representation of at least 3 elected councilors. Non parliamentary parties (Associate members) are political parties without parliamentary representation and a party with less than three councilors. TCD has been spearheading political party dialogue to ensure political tranquility, peace and harmony as well as capacity building of political parties to effectively perform their democratic functions.
