UNHCR Tanzania supports the Government of Tanzania in providing refugees and asylum seekers with international protection and durable solutions. UNHCR works primarily with the Ministry of Home Affairs as well as other government line ministries to deliver aid to the population of concern. In addition to working with other humanitarian partners, UNHCR works closely with UN agencies through the UN Development Assistance Plan as well as the United Nations Kigoma Joint Programme, aimed at supporting refugees and their host communities as well as strengthening the link between humanitarian and development initiatives, in line with the Global Compact for Refugees. As of 1 January 2022, Tanzania hosts over 246,000 refugees and asylum-seekers, mainly from Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Of these, some 83% live in the Ndutu and Nyarugusu refugee camps located in the northwestern region of Kigoma. Tanzania has had a long history of generosity in hosting refugees. Our dedicated and professional staff work around the clock in roles including legal protection, community services, public affairs, health and more. Despite the challenges they can face, our staff are proud to work for UNHCR and determined to make a positive impact.
