The Kiswahili National Council (BAKITA) is a Public Institution under the Ministry cultural guarantee. The Council was formed by an Act of Parliament No. 27 of 1967 and its amendment. According to this Act the Council is the Government Agency with the authority to overseeing and coordinating the activities of all stakeholders promoting Kiswahili in the Republic of Union of Tanzania. In addition, the Council is an important stakeholder in the development of Kiswahili internationally. BAKITA becomes a strong legal and financial institution and is respected nationally, regionally and internationally in coordinating, managing and promoting the development of Kiswahili. It cooperates with organizations like TATAKI in creation, standardization and dissemination of specialized terminologies Other institutions can propose new vocabulary to respond to emerging needs but only BAKITA can approve usage. By the end of the 1970s, terminologies had been published in Tafsisru Sanifu, a BAKITA journal, for economics and business, administration and government, mathematics, science, social science and engineering among other fields. It coordinates its activities with similar bodies in Kenya and Uganda to aid in the development of Kiswahili.
